More Than Driving Be Ready for the Unexpected.
First Aid for Drivers
Driving Theory Test to Include more Life Saving First Aid
The DVSA has announced that starting in 2026, the UK driving theory test will feature new questions covering CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) use. This marks a significant step toward making first aid knowledge a core part of responsible driving.
Why It Matters
Drivers are often the first on the scene in emergencies—especially road traffic accidents and sudden cardiac arrests. Knowing how to respond with CPR or how to operate an AED can dramatically increase survival rates. In fact:
Immediate CPR can double or triple a person’s chance of survival after cardiac arrest.
AEDs are designed to be simple and safe to use, even by untrained bystanders. When used within the first few minutes, they can restore a normal heart rhythm and save lives.
A National Push
This change reflects a growing national effort to equip more people with life saving skills, especially those likely to encounter emergencies. By integrating first aid into the driving test, the UK aims to build a more prepared and responsive public one driver at a time.
